In his lifetime, James Tissot (1836-1902) was a renowned artist whose mature career spanned both sides of the English Channel, where he garnered commercial and critical success.

New scholarship on the artist, presented in the exhibition "James Tissor: Fashion & Faith," demonstrates that even his most ebullient society paintings reveal rich and complex commentary on topics such as nineteenth century culture, religion, fashion and politics.
