In 2011 Peter Pyle and his colleagues at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute described a new species of bird, basing their findings on a specimen collected in February 1963 on Midway Atoll in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands.

Because he discovered the new species Peter was able to name the bird, and so he named it after his grandfather, Edwin Bryan.

In this presentation Peter will explain how he discovered the new species; provide updated information on its seasonality, breeding habitat requirements, and vocalizations; review potential at-sea records in the North Pacific; and present recent exiting information on where Bryan's Shearwater breeding colonies exist.
