Meet the Artist: Craig Upson
Join us in the Library Art Gallery for a special talk with Craig Upson, the featured artist behind 99 Pièces, the centerpiece of our current exhibition, Art Inspired by Literature.
Craig Upson, the artist whose painting holds place of honor on the signature wall for our current exhibition, “Art Inspired by Literature”, will speak about his work titled: “99 Pièces” and the book: “Life a User’s Manual” that inspired it.
The novel by Georges Perec, heralded as a masterpiece of the 20th century and awarded the Prix Médicis in 1978, is situated in a fictitious Parisian apartment building. The stories sited in the 99 rooms of the building take place at a single instant in time on the evening of June 23rd, 1975.
Perec was an innovative author who employed a unique constraint, or heuristic, to develop the novel’s storylines. The artwork shown here riffs off that constraint using the heuristic of our age.
Please join us in the Library Art Gallery as we celebrate that moment portrayed in the novel, now exactly 50 years later.
